In 2008/2009, peak of the recession, many people had lost their jobs, homes, and retirement savings. The economy was bad and finding new employment was near impossible. People were forced to do any job just to survive. Back then, Dale Marotzke was the Lead Service Agent for National Alamo Car Rental in DIA. Summer is always busy in the car rental business and the company had just brought in some seasonal help for their cleaning crew. These crew make vehicles ready for rentals.
“This is a fast paced and physically demanding job, folks,” Dale telling the new crew while showing the work area. He had a noticeable lisp when talking and limp when walking around. Life had took its toll on his body. “I have to keep working to stay fit,” he continued. He was moving around like a headless chicken to keep up with the fast-paced nature of the job. Dale retired from truck driving in 2006. “Truck drivers won’t live long after retirement,” remembering his old coworkers. Few had passed away right after retirement. He had worked for CF Transportation – a freight company, for over 25 years. He was a true example of safe driver and never had an accident. They were with Teamsters and he was a union representative before CF filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and went out of business. They fought hard to retire with full benefits and pension.

He was always moving, wiping windshield, spraying water and brushing with broom to remove dirt from vehicles. He used to take those “5-hour energy” drinks to keep up with the young crew. One afternoon, he collapsed by the wash bay and had to go to the emergency room. The doctors told him he had an irregular heartbeat due to high consumption of the energy drinks.
