Marko Alexandrovich Ramius, captain of a Soviet nuclear submarine, had a rough childhood. Five childhood events impacted his life. Memories of his grandmother’s stories, of tattling on a fellow student, of his friend’s murder, of his abuse by other students, and of his experiences in military school altered his view of the world he lived in. Lack of freedom and disillusionment with authority were instilled in him at a young age. It eventually led him to become the man who decided to defect from the Soviet Union with a small cult of like minded officers in his nuclear submarine, the Red October. Marko Ramius had a grandmother named Hilda Ramius who lived in Lithuania. His mother had died shortly after his birth and Marko felt he had never known her. For years Marko had been trying his hardest in military school. Even though he was still tormented in military school it wasn’t personal and soon Marko learned how to ignore how others treated him so things got better for him. Eventually his excellent efforts and willpower put him at the top of his class in military school. He was promoted to the head of his squad and he learned how to lead justly and well. He knew from his experiences that tormenting those less powerful than him was cruel and his unusual personality attracted a handful of followers who he taught to succeed. By the time Marko was ready to leave he had developed a love of the military. Although his father wanted him to pursue a political career when he got out of military school, Marko wanted to have a career in the navy. Marko remembered his love of the ocean and ships from when he was younger and convinced his father to send him to a rigorous private academy.
