Marked Women Unmarked Men Analysis

In the article, “Marked Women, Unmarked Men”, by Deborah Tannen describes how women and men are portrayed. How many times have you or heard of a person talking about someone’s appearance or style? I’m certain that it has happened numerous times. Tannen says that women are judged more than men on a daily basis. Men can wear anything and they won’t be judged. As in sweatpants and a t-shirt, people will assume that he plays a sport, works out or just decided to select that outfit for that day. If you see a woman wearing a skirt, high heels and a tank top, so many people will call her a prostitute, slut and much more. To start it off as a woman appearance is very important to us. Women have to worry about hair, nails, shoes, clothes, makeup and much more. Everyday women have to wake up thirty minutes to an hour early before their day starts just to get ready. We have to make sure we don 't look too slutty or dirty. If we are too slutty, we will get unnecessary staring and gossiping, and if we are trashy people will assume she doesn 't care about her looks. Women are marked everyday about their appearance while men get un marked. Another thing that is different is the cost of clothing and daily women things. Women’s clothing is higher than men’s clothing. Men save more money. We also have to worry about hair and nail appointments. They don 't have to worry about getting up early. All they have to do is take a shower and throw their outfit on. Men have to worry about getting a haircut every two weeks. If a woman gets pregnant, she is supposed to stay home and take care of the baby while the father goes to work. In my opinion that is a myth because I know women today who are working and taking care of their child. Another stereotype is that women are supposed to have” clean jobs” such as teachers, secretaries, nurses, and etc. Not doctors. For marital status men are usually the dominant one in the marriage and the women are supposed to please their husband and do their wifely duties. For appearance men usually wear suits to their jobs and other days sweat pants and jeans, women it 's a different style every day. For their job they wear dresses, skirts, and sometimes dress pants. Women want their outfits to have a little sexiness to their style. Women are held to more stereotypes because in the past and still until this day men think women are weak and that they should be the one’s to take
