In this episode of HBO series Addiction, Mark Willenbring discussed what could cause a person to become addicted to alcohol. He also discussed genetics and mental health disorders as they relate to alcoholism. Dr. Willenbring goes into details about the different states of alcoholism, medications to treat alcoholism, and how ineffective a confrontational approach is. According to Dr. Willenbring, alcoholism universally starts with young people. He describes alcoholism as “a disorder of young people” ages 15-25 years old. My opinion concerning the matter do not differ, I also agree that alcoholism starts at a young age majority of the time. Dr. Willenbring also discussed how family history is the strongest predictor of alcoholism. He is correct because many people who are addicted to alcohol have parents or siblings that are addicted or was addicted to alcohol. Of course, there are also exceptions; not all parents who are addicted to alcohol have children fall down the same path. Willenbring argued that mental disorders in childhood lead to alcohol use disorder in adolescents. I agree, trying to overcome a mental disorder during adolescence can be intense. An adolescent may experience severe symptoms, bullying, shame, guilt, embarrassment, and anger due to their mental illness and could possibly turn to alcohol and/or other mood altering substance to “get away from it all. When I heard this comment, I thought about a family member of mine who has been diagnosed with multiple mental disorder and experience sever bullying during middle and high school and now drinks alcohol and smoke marijuana.
