George Allen Sir once said, “One of the most difficult things everyone has to learn is that for your entire life you must keep fighting and adjusting if you hope to survive. No matter who you are or what your position is you must keep fighting for whatever it is you desire to achieve.” For Mark Watney his decision to not die on mars allowed him to fight through his trials on the planet mars. In “The Martian”, by Any Weir, Mark Watney is faced with a struggle to survive on a desolate planet where he has to fight everyday for his survival. Mark Watney’s voyage to Mars led him into an unforeseeable conflict between man and nature; Mark’s journey for survival will be hard to achieve. A hero by definition is a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities (dictionary). Mark Watney is his own hero. He faced inconceivable trials and overcame them. Mark’s main skills are in botany and mechanical engineering, but he could pretty much fix anything under the sun. He grew potatoes on a desolate planet and made his own water. Mark Watney’s main characteristics are perseverance, humor, and adaptability. Problem two, mars has no water and no sources of food. Problem three, how does he make back to earth alive? Years before his arrival on mars there was an unmanned mission called “Pathfinder”. This mission was a complete disaster, but that mishap saved mark. Once he finds pathfinder, he is then able to retrieve communication parts from it and put together a communication device to contact earth. Mark knows the recipe for water its just hydrogen and oxygen put screwing around with hydrogen is not the smartest idea but he figures out how to.
