The Martian is a tale of survival and ingenuity. To survive on Mars, one must be resourceful and clever. Mark Watney uses the D School Process to come up with ways to keep him alive. The D-School Process uses five steps: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Mark does not have to empathize too much for himself because of course he wants to live. Whenever a problem comes up he defines it. Then, he comes up with possible ways to fix it. Unfortunately, since he is on Mars, there is not a lot of room to make prototypes; therefore, he usually goes straight into testing. One of his greatest accomplishments was the rover modifications. Watney needed to travel to a new location really far away.
