Mark Watney The Martian

Decent Essays
I can relate to Mark Watney’s character in “The Martian”. Watney, a botanist and engineer, is stranded on Mars after he is presumed dead by his teammates. I could relate to Watney’s strategy in solving problem after problem to survive. Planning and creativity were key as he developed a conducive atmosphere and grew potatoes to sustain himself. Similarly, in my research and engineering projects, I always aim to develop creative, efficient solutions using tools I have, like using an iPhone’s camera to measure eye-tracker latency. I do get frustrated in failure, like Watney did on losing his crop in an explosion. However, I try to pick myself up, learn, and move on. Watney used his dry sense of humor to mentally cope with being alone and trying

I feel I am similar to Rose Philippine Duchesne in the aspect of stubbornness and perseverance. Rose Philippine Duchesne had to be both stubborn and persevering from her father, who would not let her join the Sacred Heart. He was very sure that Philippine’s life was going to be ruined by joining, but she did not let her father kill her dream of becoming part of the Sacred Heart. I feel I am similar to this because, if someone tell me that I am not able do something, I make sure I get it done faster and better than they would have ever expected me to. For example, my father always told me that our family is not a scholarship family.…

But failures are not all bad; in fact, I believe that they bring more positive outcomes than negative. They are not permanent and they are not self-defining, failures do not identify my worth or abilities, but rather present opportunities for growth. They are simply obstacles, roadblocks, as well as stepping-stones, to success. Without the obstacles that I have faced and overcome in my life, I would not have experienced personal growth to the extent that I am glad to say I have accomplished. Theory of Change Management Peter Senge promotes the idea of a Learning Organization as a theory of change management in his book ‘The Fifth Discipline’. Senge (2006) encourages the “rethinking of corporate philosophy” and a commitment to individual learning to establish a learning organization. Individual learning, according to Senge (2006), does not guarantee a learning organization, but without it, learning organization is impossible.
