The iconic 80’s song “Eye of the Tiger” by the band Survivor pairs well with Mark Watney’s powerful will to survive in the earlier days of his very long stay on Mars. Watney, barely alive, and believed to be dead by his crewmates he was left alone on the barren planet of Mars. Even worse, if one thing is out of place or suddenly breaks, he’s a goner. In chapter 2, through this hardship however, our protagonist brings himself to smile and crack jokes just like it was another leisurely day, however he is still utterly aware of his situation and he knows what he needs to do. The main lyrics of the song say, “It’s the eye of the tiger”. The eye symbolizes how a tiger is always focused on its target, in this case, how Watney is determined to reach

The comic, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibson, employs a reoccurring symbol of a smiley face stained with blood covering its left eye. This reoccurrence of the symbol suggests that there is more to it than what the eye meets. It is such a simple symbol that shows happiness, yet is presented in such a convoluted manner in the comic. The smiley face in Watchmen is used ironically throughout the text to show how the characters, and perhaps all humans try to overlook or falsify violence, reality, and immorality, and further shows that these characteristics can’t be covered up. Additionally, the symbol suggests that we live in a pretense world where we try to find happiness, by ultimately happiness is unobtainable because there will always…

How does Spiegelman’s use of contrasting shading methods, specific metaphors, and vivid symbolism in Maus show not only the views of the Nazis of the Jews, but how the Jews ended up viewing themselves. Spiegelman’s use of shading portrays the loss of identity, sets the scene, and shows the guilt that Valdek felt during and after the Holocaust. On pages 51, 55, and 58, Spiegelman uses the pattern of prison stripes on the faces of the mice to portray a sense of loss of individuality. It is normal for the clothes of prisoners to have stripes on them, but when Spiegelman expands that pattern onto the full bodies of the Jews, it makes the reader understand the sense of lost individuality the Jews felt since the reader can’t tell the mice apart from…

Symbolism in To Kill a Mocking Bird Whether it be in literature or even shown in pictures, people use things to represent something with a deeper meaning and that’s called symbolism. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by author Harper Lee, various different themes or symbols are active throughout the book all directly or in some way being tied to the ultimate theme of the book, which is not being able to understand someone until you experience life from their point of view. The most apparent reoccurring theme though is equality because of the fact it’s symbolized through people, birds, and even inanimate objects that Scout and Jem encounter over the course of the book in the tree that turns out to play a bigger part of the story as the…
