October 18, 2014. The morning light trickled down through the dense canopy of trees that encircled the cemetery as I walked through the grassfield in front of the entrance. Only a few clouds blotched the otherwise flawless sky-blue. Passing the entrance that read “Los Angeles National Cemetery”, two signs stood in front of me: one with a list of floral regulations, the other welcoming visitors, while warning them of prohibited activities. Behind it, a black signpost read: “Blue Star Memorial, A tribute to the Armed Forces that have defended the United States of America”.…

Our Fifth Amendment says so, and yet this isn’t the case.…

Next, the poem abruptly switches to a lyrical voice adding a sense of musicality and anaphora. The shift emphasizes the change the speaker and her family feel when they acknowledge they are being judged by the white population. As a result, the poem first appears very uniform, then as “the white judges” (10), watch the poem drastically switches, appearing chaotic and unorderly in lyrical form. The goal of this was to entice the viewers to connect the piece to contemporary issues, and see the same plea for freedom happening across the world.…
