Samuel was age 12 when his father passed of pneumonia. His father was the only source of income, so this forced the family into economic struggle (Biography.com Editors). Samuel knew he needed to provide for his family, and at age 13, he found his first job at the Hannibal Courier as an apprentice printer. In 1851, at age 15, he got a job as a printer and editorial assistant at the Hannibal Western Union that was owned by his brother, Orion. It was here that Samuel discovered he enjoyed writing (Estate of Mark Twain). In 1857, Samuel learned the art of piloting a steamboat, and he was a licensed pilot by 1859. This began the stage of regular employment for Samuel. He was able to bring in a decent income for a couple of years, but his career was cut short in 1861 by the Civil War.
