Today, humans rule the planet. Humans are the “higher animals” of the earth (Twain). Naturally, this would make all other animals the “lower animals” of the earth (Twain). Taking a good, hard and honest look at this hierarchy, could one truly come to this assessment? Sure, humans arrived here based off of their actions, development of technology, and intelligence. However, looking at their current state, can one truly call them the higher of the animals? Maybe it is more appropriate to refer them as: The Human Race, the lowest of the high due wastefulness, cruelty, and lack of compassion for one another. It can be something that unites many people and assist them in living a harmonious life. All humans are different. They have different thoughts, different beliefs, and even look different. Animals are not different. The same situation applies to them as it does to humans. As Mark Twain continues his experiments he places different animals into one habitat. He introduces them one at a time. In the end, over the course of two days, he taught a cat, dog, rabbit, fox, goose, squirrel, monkey and some doves to leave together in peace (Twain). When attempting a similar scenario with humans, the outcome was not the same. He placed nine humans into a habitat. All of them were from different parts of the world. They had the same differences previously mentioned (as did the animals). Mark Twain stayed away for two whole days and when he returned he said “there was chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh no a specimen left alive” (Twain). With this being said, compassion is not something that one just has. It is something that can build over time. With these examples, you can see that the animals, as different as they were, still found a way to coexist together in the same habitat without and physically cruel acts done to each other. The humans on the other hand, found a way to their end in a dark and violent
