Once his father died his mother became head of the household and Samuel had to quit school and got a job as an apprentice printer at the Hannibal Courier, which paid him in a small ration of food. Then when he was fifteen he got a job as a printer and occasional writer and editor at the Hannibal Western Union, a little newspaper owned by his brother that is when it sparked his interest to become a writer but he didn’t think about it again until later in his life.
