Mark Twain is an author we will read soon -- he’s hilarious and this quote is supposed to be funny. What does it mean? Is he literally talking about church? Or something else?
Mark Twain's quote means that a bad person can not be fixed because he is in the presence of something righteous. If a sinner goes to church for only 20 minutes of the service, he will still be the same person. For real change, he needs to dedicate his life. What do these metaphors mean and what is their effect? “open air sleight of hand” “intellectual pocket picked” and “ideological luggage”. The metaphor of "open air sleight of hand" a represents Lincolns ability to captivate the attention of the audience. He was able convince them that slavery is wrong or at least make them think twice about it. He was able to change the perspective that the Constitution was seen in. The effect of this metaphor is that it compared Lincoln to a magician, he did the unexpected. He was able to change the way that the Constitution was perceived. The metaphor "intellectual pocket picked" means that the audience listening for this speech did not expect this. While Lincoln did not steal anything everyone was taken back by the things that Lincoln said. The effect of this is that Lincoln "stole" something from the audience and they did not recognize it was gone. They always knew that slavery was wrong, but they did not want to admit it. The metaphor of "ideological luggage" means that due to the time period they are held back. The "luggage" which in this case represents slavery is too heavy for them to move forward.
