Humor is the epitome of everything that has meaning. The great thing about humor, is that it can be displayed in many ways and have lots of different interpretations. For example, in Mark Twain’s “Advice to Youth,” we get to experience his use of satire and sarcasm throughout his entire essay. He uses real world examples and morphs them into his version of humor. But aside from essays and readings, specific theories of laughter are used to connect the audience to both what they read and how they expound their findings. The three theories related to “Advice to Youth”, include the incongruity theory, the superiority theory, and the relief theory. Readers would find Mark Twain’s “Advice to Youth” funny because all three theories go into effect. …show more content…
This is the best policy in the long run, because if you don’t, they will make you.” This is an example of using the superiority theory because the parents are considered to have more power over their children because they are older. And even though parents could be wrong, children must obey them because they are considered to be wiser. For these reasons, parents are thought to be superior. Twain also said, “If a person offends you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. That will be sufficient (Twain 1882).” That is an example of incongruity theory because hitting someone with a brick seems to be very appalling and completely out of the ordinary. To explain, Twain is trying to say is that if someone threatens you, you should not resort to violence, unless it’s absolutely necessary and no one is watching …show more content…
A real-life example of incongruity theory is the act of falling down or up the stairs in front of so many people at school. At this brief and embarrassing moment, two things come in mind, either we get up right away and brush it off, or we sit down and mope about it. At time like these, quickly getting up and laughing about it seems to be the best option.
Relief theory comes into play when you have a bunch of family over for that Thanksgiving dinner that you’ve been looking forward to all year long. Suddenly someone tries to comment on someone else’s lifestyle choices within the past year, and things get bad real fast. At this moment, you can save everyone from Thanksgiving monstrosity by either cracking a joke about cold turkey or putting a funny Snapchat filter on them and showing it to them all

Although everybody enjoys a good laugh, I want to come back to the idea that laughter doesn’t belong in political matters. Often times, satire creates questioning of whether people are laughing with or at each other. This ambiguity accentuates the differences between two groups of people and raises the question of whether or not people are friends or…

Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was no exception to his frequent use of the stylistic device. Satire is often used to mock others through the use of humor as well as exaggeration. In fact, in a letter addressed to Twain’s siblings, Orion and Mary Clemens, Twain spoke on his weaknesses as well as his strengths. Twain wrote, “ [ An But ]I have had a “call” to [literarture], of a low order—i.e. humorous. It is nothing to be proud of, but it is my strongest suit…”…

Humor detracts from the existential dread of any suggestion, though it must be pulled off without a hitch or awkward pause. Misfired humor is the fodder of racist propaganda and horror stories. Needing to explain how jokes work marks one not just incompetent at humor, but also useless to society. To work, comedy may be subtly emphasized, must have multiple possible meanings, might teeter near the boundary to the unforgivable, and should balance the identity of the audience & butt of the joke with…

When high school classrooms approach the time to read Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, unnecessary drama tends to appear alongside the novel. Many schools tried to censor the novel and flat out ban it from being taught in classrooms. Huckleberry Finn should not be considered a racist novel because of Twain’s use of satire, acceptance of historical realism, and the treatment of Jim in the novel. One of the key aspects of the book is the heavy use of satire. Twain purposely includes this to mock the events going on in his own society.…

As a child, even with restrictions from parents, it is still a time of freedom. Children should not have to worry about what people are going to think if they complete an unpopular action, but rather what color of crayon to use next. In today's crappy society, people tend to think that they have a say in how one lives their life. The victims of this villainous society are corrupted to think that they need to make decisions on their life based on society's rules in their instruction manual. In Mark Twain’s fictional novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain uses satire to address our common struggle of choosing individuality or confronting to society.…

Satire has been used to criticize aspects of government, culture and people ever since it was first created in ancient times. Satire has made us laugh and find humor, but the real reason of satire is to criticize something. Satire can be lighthearted or serious, it just has the same purpose; to change something. Huckleberry Finn is a classic example of satire. Huckleberry Finn was created in part to satirize slavery and the evil of the south at that time.…

People in today’s society have adopted humor and comedies into their everyday lives, whether it’d be from shows such as Saturday Night Live or from a cartoon column in the newspaper. The success of these humorous selections comes from the entertainment value as well as the sheer value of laughter. Through these positive, light-hearted responses, viewers of humorous programs associate the authors of these comedies with harmless, beneficial motivations. Stephen Colbert relayed his thoughts during an interview, saying, “You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time.” Thus, de Botton’s view on the role of humorists is correct as it identifies humorists as effective messengers.…

The concept of humor is targeted around a person producing a comical statement or something that produces laughter and enjoyment to an audience. In the book titled Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton, the writer hypothesizes that the position of humor in society is to bring out repressed mind and messages that regular human beings can relate and apprehend without restriction from others. I trust that de Botton's stance toward humor having a vital role within the feature of society is true, because humor does indiscreetly permit people to freely vocalize and itemize information without the contraints of society on them, but additionally gives people greater awareness of the presence of wrongs in a society through making the observation surrounding…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
