Did you know that Mary Shelley, the author of one the most studied books in our recent history, was less than twenty years old when she started writing the novel Frankenstein? Pretty impressive considering how complex the book is, plot, characters and all. One of the things we all know about this book is how a doctor created a creature and this creature went on a rampage and killed people and we all think we know how monstrous he is. But that’s not the full story, some could argue that Victor Frankenstein, the doctor who created this monster, is actually more of a monstrous character than the creature that we all have come to know as the “monster”. Victor is cruel to his creation, he is neglectful, so much so that he gets his own creation to…

The creature, at the beginning of his life, was an innocent being who just wanted someone to have as a friend and teach him how to survive.…

Vengeance According to Chinese Proverbs, “He who seeks vengeance must dig two graves: one for his enemy and one for himself.” This quote helps justify that vengeance doesn’t only harm your enemy, it also harms yourself. One who seeks vengeance can be so corrupt by seeking it upon their enemy, that it may start to also corrupt their own self. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams is so set on seeking vengeance on Elizabeth Proctor and the other town’s people, that it starts to take over her and affect her ability to rationalize her decision making.…

Chillingworth, first characterized by Nathaniel Hawthorne as a very calm and intellectual man with good intentions whose desire for vengeance corrupts his once pure intent in The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne's diction in the metaphor “of a judge desirous only of truth” characterizes Chillingworth as an upright unbiased man held by analytical views who sought a solution abstained from human affections . However the judges craving for reprisal corrupted the systematic investigation and “seized the old man within its gripe” forcing a new, darker being over Chillingworth's consciousness, fueled by the wrongs inflicted upon him. Chillingworth deceived by his own personality, has never emotionally had any feelings with anyone. So personal to Chillingworth,…

The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller about the Salem witch trials of 1692. The play illustrates the sudden empowerment of women, the fall of community, and the loss of power of high-ranking people, like Reverend Parris and John Proctor. Throughout the play, there is evidence that many characters, power rises while it falls for others. For example in 1692 women did not have any power at all, but as soon as Abby and the other girls accuse upstanding members of the community of witchcraft their power rises above those upstanding members and those people’s power goes down in maelstrom.…

This quote is tremendously important to remember while fighting for your rights. I am able to relate to this quote because of my religion. Other than spreading love, Islam teaches us that fighting injustice unjustly is unjust. To me this quote means that we should always avoid violence no matter the circumstance.
