Mr. Boone- The Brave Man
What would you do if your mom abandoned you? The novel the curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon, Mr. Boone had shown how much he cared about his autistic son Christopher. He never gave up on trying getting him back, unlike his mother who just left and never came back. Mr. Boone is definitely the better parent, his failings are completely understandable and there is never a doubt about his love for and commitment to his son. All of this ultimately allows Christopher to overcome his disability to achieve his goals. Even though Mr. Boone has always been there for Christopher, he does have his imperfections. Mr. Boone had done many terrible things and had told many lies to Christopher. He was never supportive of the fact that Christopher was trying to solve the mystery of the murdered dog. He also prevented Christopher from writing his book and hid it from him. Mr. Boone was constantly cursing and getting angry at Christopher for talking to Mrs. Alexander. “Then he said ‘Holy fucking Jesus, Christopher. How stupid are you?’...’don’t give me that bollocks, you little shit. You knew exactly what you were bloody doing. I’ve read the book, remember?”’ (81) Then he had grabbed hold of Christopher’s arm and hits him.

Leo is stating that in life you have to suffer a great deal, the suffering leads to a great deal of happiness in life. Chris viewed this as an inspiration, because he had suffered throughout his journey, even though he had a lot of obstacles he did not quit until he finally met his initial point, it is what made him happy. The main case against Mr. Boone is that he lied to Christopher about his mother’s death. Mrs. Boone no longer loved Mr. Boone and she went away with their neighbor Mr. Shears, leaving Mr. Boone to take care of Christopher on his own. After she left, Mr. Boone told Christopher “that she died of a heart attack” and that he wouldn’t be able to see her again(27). By not revealing the truth of his mother’s absence, he fabricates the truth by saying that she is dead, which is a lie. Christopher hates lies and he says himself that “ loving someone is … telling them the truth” so by Mr. Boone not telling the truth about his mother, to Christopher that means that his father doesn’t love him.…

The author applies sarcasm to show Christopher’s discomfort in his current surroundings as he is hindered by the wording as well as the new location. The use of double meanings to show Christopher’s panic is common throughout the novel. Moreover, when Christopher learns that his father has been lying to him, he says, “It was like the room was swinging from side to side” (112).…

This characteristic is mainly important in his relationship with his father. In the beginning of the story, Christopher had a strong relationship with his father because he relied on Father for care giving and positive attention. After Father admits to killing Mrs.Shears’s dog, Christopher realizes that he will not be able to trust Father again. The readers can figure this out from when Christopher says, “[...] he could murder me, because I couldn’t trust him, even though he had said ‘Trust me’,‟ because he had told a lie about a big thing” (Haddon 122). However, instead of accepting that the man is trying to help Christopher, his reaction is violent even if he doesn’t harm the man ‘So I took out my Swiss Army Knife.’ This shows Christopher’s inability to understand that others may be able to think on their own as he doesn’t understand why someone would come to him on their own. The problem is displayed in chapter 163, ‘when I was little I didn’t understand about other people having minds’, and although he says, ‘I don’t find this difficult now’, it is still evident that he is still struggling with the idea of other people having minds, even if he can cope with the idea better than when he was younger. This shows that having a unique protagonist to follow throughout the story, who isn’t perfect but ultimately human, may be the most…
