A Hero’s Journey

The monomyth is a series of steps created by Joseph Campbell which help develop the journey the hero in the book experiences. The Odyssey, by Homer, is a epic poem that tells the tale of a man named Odysseus and his ten-year journey to return home from the Trojan War. He faces numerous challenges along the way and when he arrives he must confront the suitors who have been living in his house trying to marry his wife. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is a book by Mark Haddon which is told from the viewpoint of a teenage boy with behavioral issues. One of the most important key aspects of the character is that he has behavioral issues. He does not particularly like strangers, but he does like dogs. This is why he is determined to find out who killed his neighbor’s dog, but in doing so he is going against his father’s rules. When he is suspiciously found in the neighbor’s garden, he is arrested for trespassing and assaulting a policeman, but this is only the beginning. Christopher from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, is more like the archetype in the sense that it follows the steps more fluidly. His ordinary world is more explicitly explained and it is very distinct when he crosses the threshold. His refusal to the call is his father plainly telling him not to “go sticking his nose in other people’s business,” whereas Odysseus does not face an obstacle in starting his …show more content…
In the novel, Mark Haddon describes the fight Mr. Spears and Christopher’s mother are having where he goes into Christopher’s room to yell at him, but Christopher’s mother pulls him away. According to the author and Christopher’s observations, Mr. Spears had been drinking the night of the fight. The fight induced Christopher’s mother to take Christopher and leave London. The story of Christopher in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is more like the archetype because he has brought back knowledge from the special world. His experience on his trip to London can help Christopher in the future now that he has returned to his ordinary world. Some might argue that Odysseus had gained knowledge as well, but even so, he does not apply them to his solution of the suitors later on; his main focus is to get rid of
