Mark Cuban's Authentic Leadership

Mark Cuban was born in Pittsburgh in 1958. He lived with his father who worked at a car upholstery shop. His grandfather was very important in his upbringing. His grandfather, Morris Chobanisky, emigrated from Russia and provided for his family by selling merchandise out of his truck. Cuban learned a lot from his grandfather including persistence for making deals and a better life for himself. Cuban was an entrepreneur since Elementary school. At the age of 12, Cuban sold sets of garbage bags to save up for a pair of shoes. In high school he became a stamp and coin salesman to earn extra money. Cuban was a high achiever deciding to take psychology classes at the University of Pittsburgh his junior year of high school and then skipping his …show more content…
The three variations researchers conceptualize authenticity as is Intrapersonal, Interpersonal and Developmental. Cuban displays all of these traits. He is shows Intrapersonal authenticity by being in touch with his self. He doesn't care what anyone thinks he can do but only what he thinks he can do. Cuban says in an article by Dave Ramsey “there is no reason it can’t be you” (Ramsey, Dave, and Mark Cuban). This shows extreme self-confidence that he can do whatever he sets his mind to. Cuban says not only to everybody in business but also to the Maverick players “the one thing in life you can control is your effort” (Ramsey, Dave, and Mark Cuban). Cuban believes that he can do whatever he is willing to work for. He is passionate about doing what he believes is best for himself but also others. He shows the Interpersonal side of Authentic Leadership through connecting with people. He tells Business Insider, “Great businesses can create value for several major constituencies, not just shareholders. They can create value for customers, shareholders, employees, and communities” (Blodget Henry). Mark Cuban leadership style is quite unique. He is unfiltered, very opinionated and has a pretentious personality. It is said that he made waves when he called Kobe Bryant’s sexual assault case ‘great for the NBA. Its reality television, people love train-wreck television and you hate to admit it but that I the truth, that's the reality of today.’ He has also been known to attack former directors and referees. He criticized former director of NBA of officiating Ed Rush, saying he “ might have been a great ref, but I wouldn't hire him to a manage a Dairy Queen.” Cuban has totaled more than $2 million in NBA fines for his comments over the years. Cuban is not one bit worried as to what someone else thinks about him which is an admirable trait and is a key reason why is makes a good leader. Many people called Cuban
