The first patent was filled by Mark B. Barron’s in 1979 and was granted in 1984. His invention called “chemo cap” was basically a cap structure built using many chambers. These chambers are able to maintain low temperature for a period of time. His idea was to provide an environment with a reduced temperature around the scalp of the patient to prevent alopecia (hair loss). Barron’s provided a clear design of the cap in his patent. He also gave some information about the liquid to be used inside the cap chamber. The liquid suggested by Barron’s was any type of refrigerant gel but preferably any gel containing starch and borax or another types which he called ‘slow melting ices’. It is a cap from three chambers which can be adjusted to change size in accordance with the patient head size. Barron’s patent expired in 1998 because the studies between 1980 and 1990 were not that encouraging. From 1995 to 2003 an analysis was made on 53 studies and the results were encouraging with a success rate of 73%. These result have refocused on the importance of scalp cooling in the reduction of alopecia. Newer studies have shown a huge success rate up to 90 percent with some chemotherapy treatments. To this day dignicap and penguin are widely used in Europe. The dignicap system was introduced in Sweden for the first time in 1990 with the University Hospitals in Umeå and Lund. After being used by more than 4000 patient the reported success rate was over 80%. The penguin cold cap was introduced in 1997 and was invented by Frank Fronda. For the first couple of years after the introduction of dignicap and peguin there was a slow adoption of these two systems in the United States. The main reason was that the cap could induce metastases of the scalp. But a study published in 2009 had shown that the 1.1% who used the cap had shown an incidence of scalp metastasis compared to 1.2% for women who did not use cap. So the cap has no effect at
