The Tragedy of Julius Caesar “Et tu, Brute?” is a common phrase that is said among the world, which is what is believed to be the Roman dictator, Julius Caesar, who died in 44 B.C. last words. This saying is in Latin, a language that very few people actually do know, means “and you, Brutus?” or “you, too, Brutus?” In this essay I will be speaking on how I believe that Mark Antony had a better speech than Brutus, there are many reasons why, and I will go into greater detail in them, but for now, one of the main ideas on why it is a greater speech, which is the attention and response that he got from the crowd. This is something that you should not do to those who would be able to give you your power. Another example of this would be when they are speaking, Brutus references the people as friends last, and more so as Romans, Countrymen, then friends. (3.2.13-14) While his counterpart, Antony does the opposite, he references the crowd as friends, Romans, lastly, countrymen. (3.2.73) Something that is interesting, is that from Brutus’ speech that he gave, the crowd does support him, he is saying that if people don’t agree with his actions, also known as Julius Caesar’s death, then he will slay himself with the same dagger he slewn Caesar with. (3.2.42) People were calling out for him to live, but that is all about what happens just back and forth talk, while with Antony, it’s the opposite. People are listening to what he is saying then when he takes his pauses, they all call out saying on how bad the conspirators are. This is where I think the two different speeches differ the most. For example, where I said before where between Brutus and the crowd, how they are saying how they want him to be king and everything, and then where Antony has everyone riled up and ready to revolt and kill the conspirators.
