Mark 4: A Passage Of Scripture

In this passage of scripture, we find the disciples stuck in not just any storm, but “a great windstorm.” In the previous verse of Mark 4, Jesus had been in that same boat preaching the gospel. Now the teaching was over and Jesus was weary and in need of rest. We all can understand that. You know how it is when you have ministered all day, it takes much of your energy, so He was tired. Mark 4:37-40 begins with the windstorm, and if we go two verses before to Mark 4:35 you see that Jesus had instructed them to cross over to the other side. Which means that they found themselves in the middle of a great storm because they have been commanded to cross the Sea of Galilee.
Crossing the sea was Jesus’ request and God’s will, yet they were in a storm. The wind is over powering them, water is filling the boat, and I imagine that the boat is sinking. As I paint the picture for you I reminisce on the many times that I have been in the middle of the storm, and fighting with all my might; however, feeling powerless to the violent winds of life. Many times, that is what we do in life. We see our weakness but we never address them so we end up “stuck,” like the disciples; or hurt, damaged and worst off than we were before we started like me after the race. Weaknesses indicate areas that we need to work on, and attention to those weak areas produce growth. For this reason, identifying your weaknesses is vital in a storm because it will aid in recognizing your strengths; as well as teach you how to rely on God so that he can show up strong, because the storms of life can present the Savior to us in a way we may have never considered before. Right from the start, our two essays approach their own topics in their own unique ways, using their own unique terminologies, and describing their individual weather event in drastically different tones. The first essay, What They Don’t Tell You About Hurricanes, starts off by declaring the uncertainty of a hurricane. The essay elaborates on the aftermath of a previous maelstrom that maliciously tore through the coast, initiating deadly lightning fires and horrendous floods. The monotonous way one prepares for such a storm is described almost in a detached, robotic way as if the ones preparing do not want to show any emotion because they know that if they do, all that will emerge is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the known, and an incredible…

Theme Song Essay Music has always been such a necessity to me. Sometimes when I listen to certain songs it brings so many different emotions to me, other times music will remind me of certain memories or people. Music can be such a powerful thing to some people. You can listen to music when you are sad, happy, excited, angry, etc. However, my go-to song when I feel like I'm going through a hard time and need some motivation or reminder that you have to stay positive through all the negative situations in life is Olivia Lane’s song “Make My Own SunShine”.…

In the passage Matthew 14:22 – 33, Matthew describes the scene in which the boat housing the disciples is being fiercely beaten by the waves in the ocean. The disciples have been alone, straining at the oars and struggling against the wind and the water for hours to keep afloat and they are tired. It isn’t until the fourth watch of the night that Jesus appears to them in the middle of the sea, walking on water. The disciples are fearful and Jesus dispels any doubts they may have had by using words of reassurance. Jesus says, “It is I. Don’t be afraid”.…

The verse that I chose for my history of interpretation is Romans 9:6-16. This verse is significant in soteriology because it signifies that God is the only one that has the right to decide whom will be saved and whom will be damned. In other words, God saves individuals he thinks to deserve a place in his kingdom and perish people who do not deserve a place in heaven. This passage is also important because it teaches Christians about divine election, how individuals are predestined to salvation and God’s sovereignty. Also, God creates some people for eradication to show his fury and power and creates others for grace to show his mercy.…

The purpose of the synoptic Gospels is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to as many people as possible. The writers of the Gospels do this by targeting specific audiences in each of their writings and by also presenting a very specific image of who Jesus Christ was. The Gospel of Mark, thought to be the first Gospel written, spreads the message of Jesus by presenting him as a mysterious man. Mark’s intended audience was mainly the Gentile people who would have been hearing about Jesus for the first time. The Gospel of Matthew, which is thought to have been written second and probably used Mark as a source, is primarily focused on the Jewish people.…
