Family Health Assessment
This paper will discuss a family health assessment based on 11 categories of functional health patterns developed by Marjory Gordon. These classifications are used by nurses in the nursing process to systematically collect data to provide a comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient and family (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2013).
The Shakespeare family lives in a suburban neighborhood and consists of husband and wife, Romeo and Juliet, and a 13-year-old son, Ash. They have been married for 16 years and a typical nuclear family. The husband works as an accountant in an accounting firm and plays softball on the weekends. Both Romeo and Juliet agree that by demonstrating to Ash their love, faithfulness, dedication, and responsibility to one another by example, it would hopefully show him the value and significance of loyalty, commitment, and love. They admit that discussion of safe sex, AIDS, and consequences of premarital sex to Ash is a challenging task. Ash states that his elementary school has had discussions about hygiene and basic physical anatomy and physiology but he felt embarrassed by it. Juliet uses aromatherapy with essential oils to help alleviate stress. To cope with stressful situations, the family utilizes discussion amongst each other and obtains extended family help and support when needed. They both decided that by being calm and supportive of each other in times of stress are what keeps them strong as a family.
Value – Belief Pattern
This pattern describes the importance of principles and spiritual beliefs that guide the family’s decision making. The family is a special occasion only practicing Catholics. Other than Juliet’s frequent use and faith in aromatherapy and essential oil use, there’s really no other cultural or spiritual beliefs shared. Juliet admits being proactive with teaching right and wrong. She would tell Ash straight what’s right and wrong. Romeo likes the idea of letting Ash experience and learn from his own mistakes.
Wellness Nursing Diagnoses
• Readiness for enhanced nutrition as evidenced by poor and inefficient food choices for healthy nutrition. The family’s different eating habits, likes, dislikes and schedule makes them prone to ineffective eating pattern. The family could use some nutrition counseling or increase exposure to website resources such as MyPyramid.com and ChooseMyPlate.org that can be used as guidelines to appropriate intake to achieve health
