Dear Editor,

Yesterday, you reported on the tragedy that occurred in Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where seventeen innocent people had lost their lives.

This is ridiculous as the United States Legislative Body doesn’t seem to be affected and not being able to resolve this problem. The Legislative Body’s solution is to increase school security by having experienced teachers possess guns during school hours to defend students and themselves. This solution is perceiving as teachers may use the guns to protect themselves but not the students. The misuse of the gun may end up dangerous for not only the students but other teachers. Nevertheless, the deficiency

Nedzel initially catches every person’s eye by starting off the very first sentence by listing every school shooting. Nedzel uses pathos in that moment to set a serious tone and begins to engage reader’s attention. The author notes that school shootings are shattering and has concerned society from the start. “Concealed Carry” shows how school shootings started as an individual killing one or two people, but has evolved to an individual killing a large number of faculty or students. Some parents or grandparents reading the article written by Nedzel immediately begin to visualize their children or grandchildren sitting innocently in the classroom when a terrifying being barges in the door with a gun ready to shoot their precious child and their friends.…

One topic has been ripping through America, resurfacing every couple months after another tragic event — Shootings. The type of shooting that I fear most take place where I am required to attend 5 days a week, 10 months of the year — school. The idea of teachers being allowed to have guns rattles me more. How do teachers being armed prevent school shootings? In fact, looking at recent news stories teachers having guns becomes an apparently bad idea.…

After the Sandy Hook (2013) shooting the National Rifle Association suggested that every school in America no matter the size have armed guards. Looking the enrollment size of a school with less than three hundred people about twenty-three percent of schools had security guards or sworn in officers in (2005-2006) school year; and about twenty-seven point six percent in (2007-2008) and the number goes down to twenty-five percent in (2009-2010) school year. When the enrollment size increases to 300-499 students, the same pattern occurs with a school enrollment size 300 or less. In the school year 2005-2006 about thirty percent of schools had security guards or sworn in officers. In the school year 2007-2008 the number increases to thirty-six percent of school nation wide having armed personnel in schools.…

Within the last month and a half, the words, ‘school shooting’ and ‘gun control’ has been on every citizen's tongue. Stoneman Douglas High School becomes the fifth largest school shooting in the US on February 14th, 2018. Debates about gun control and mental illness rage on, yet there is another issue that students have asked for that has been scarcely debated; whether In Loco Parentis should be banned from schools. In Loco Parentis translates “in places of the parents” and which gives the same legal rights for a teacher to be over the student, like a parent to a child. In Loco Parentis should not be banned from schools, leaving teachers as guardians of the student during school days.…

America has the most school shootings in the entire world and this country thinks that teachers should not carry guns. Liberals believe nobody should carry guns at all but they forget that criminals do not abide by the laws and are going to do what they want. The weapons that are used in school shootings are brutal. Criminals use pipe bombs, and primarily rifles since they are better for mass shootings. Banning guns will not change a thing the only way this is possible is if we take action by training our teachers to be able to protect the students with weapons making schools in America safer.…

These are the statistics of only three of the many school shootings that take place nationwide. Students and teachers were fatally harmed for no reason at all by troubled teens who struggled in their everyday lives. If they had been given proper help, would that have made a difference? If the schools had better security and safety precautions, would it have saved the many valuable lives lost? Although school shootings are insufferable tragedies, they benefit modern society with improvements in security tactics, mental health services, and crime prevention through environmental design.…

The concrete permanence of guns when in the wrong hands is something that should not be taken lightly; nor should be a situation that involves children, being around firearms. Children are the foundation of our future society, to ensure that every child gets quality education is extremely high on the list of importance in education, a child’s safety and well being comes far before any academic achievement. Ensuring that the learning place is a safe haven for cognitive progression and development is essential to the learning process. To allow guns into this safe haven for progression within young children is an absolutely absurd concept to even being to attempt to wrap my head around. Unfortunately in Arizona private schools they are able to have guns on campus with proper regulations in place.…

Arming teachers and staff in public schools is an agreeable, but yet also a destructive way of keeping themselves and the students safe. Teachers and other staff members can leave their gun in their desk and any student can access their desk if that teacher leaves their classroom even for a split second. If a student does this then they may not know about gun safety and or how to use it. This could turn into a harmful situation. If we arm teachers do the school boards have the policies and procedures to govern the carrying and use of firearms.…
