Although Bruce Lee died at the young age of 32 due to an allergic reaction to a painkiller, Lee left an amazing legacy behind him (Bruce Lee Biography). Many of Bruce Lee’s philosophies and quotes about life, happiness and attitude are looked upon today for inspiration. Bruce Lee’s overall philosophy was that with knowledge came self-knowledge. That with an understanding of the world you could grow to know yourself. Bruce Lee’s ability to be such an amazing martial artist came from his capacity to adapt to the world around him. In 1971 on a TV series Bruce Lee stated one of his most famous quotes ,“Be like water making its way through the cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it”(“Be Like Water: The Philosophy and Origin of Bruce Lee’s Famous Metaphor for Resilience”). Lee’s explained that water is able to take many forms, reflect other objects and yet remain itself. Although this is one of Bruce Lee’s most famous quotes Marjane Satrapi did not follow with this way of thinking. It is easy to assume that Marjane Satrapi would have been like water while living in Iran by adjusting to her oppressive environment. But, she chose to do what felt right, which was speak out for her rights irrespective to the danger she may face. Satrapi’s bravery truly showed its self when she was attending a meeting at school one day where the girls were being scolded for dressing “inappropriately”. Instead of listening in agreeance Satrapi stood out and explained to the “protectors of the movement” that they were hypocritical and sexist for not giving the men in the school the same stipulations(Satrapi, 297). This moment of bravery could have had her expelled from school, jailed or even beaten but, she did it anyway. Marjane Satrapi’s bravery continued and in many cases landed her in great deals of trouble. But, she pushed forward and followed her own beliefs regardless of the risk. Satrapi’s parents understood how dangerous Iran was for such an outspoken girl and sent her away to Europe but even this did not halt Satrapi’s courage.
