It wasn’t long after Mariucci graduated from NMU that he returned as the football team’s Quarterback and Running Back Coach in 1978. Before he was hired as a Head Coach, Mariucci spent 1978-1995 holding various assistant coaching positions with NMU, Cal State Fullerton, Louisville, The Orlando Renegades, The Los Angeles Rams, USC, University of California, and the Green Bay Packers. In 1992, with the Packers he held the position of Quarterbacks coach where he helped mold Brett Favre into the legend he is today.

After his job with the Packers, in 1996 he accepted the Head Coaching position at the University of California. Since that season Mariucci has always held the position of Head Coach. In 1997 he was hired by the San Francisco 49ers
