Marist College Internship Analysis

This past week I had the opportunity to attend the internship fair here at Marist College. I got to experience talking to professionals about future internship and employment opportunities available for me as a student. From this, I learned about different companies while keeping my options open to future employers. Upon entering the career fair, I made use of my time by talking to as many companies as I could that I saw were looking for communications and fashion majors. I talked to nine companies in total including, 24 Seven Inc., Bed Bath & Beyond, Haddad Brands, Highwire PR, Indeed.com, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Ross, and TJX Companies. I asked each employer about his or her location, internship opportunities, and about different reasons why they …show more content…
Reading up on an internship opportunity online can be useful, but being able to talk to an employer face to face gave me an overall better feeling about the program and company. I was able to distinguish if this internship was the right fit for me. I also was able to ask as many questions as I wanted and have a one on one conversation as oppose to emailing the company. Also, I like the fact that I have business cards that I can keep and use for future reference. To me, this is extremely valuable that I have talked to someone in the company before applying for the internship. While looking back on my experience, I feel as if I could have researched the companies a little more and asked them specific questions based on their internship programs. From this, I could have been able to get a deeper and better understanding of the programs. I should have looked at the list in advanced that the career service office sent out via email. I will be sure to do this in the future so I make a better impression on the …show more content…
It has made me think more about looking into internship programs and researching what I think is the best fit for me. Every semester I will attend the career fair because it helps with gaining connections and seeing new companies that I may have never known about before. The internship fair has also helped me to take my next steps to employment more seriously. I have a folder now with all my cover letter, business cards, my resume, and informational papers. Also, while going through my closet, I realized I needed to pick up more business attire for future interviews. In the long run, I know the internship fair will supply me with a useful step forward towards making connections and finding job opportunities that I did not know of

I first started looking for a summer internship during the spring 2015 school semester. I used various outlets and applied to many jobs in Long Island, NY and in Albany, NY. I found that using career websites, such as CareerSaint or Indeed.com, did not result in me finding much because I would send out my resume, and not really know who my resume went to so I could not follow up with the company if I wanted to. So, I started researching online, mainly using search engines such as Google.com, companies that I thought would be a good fit for me. My major is Actuarial Science, however I am still looking at working in different areas in business in order to find something that I really enjoy doing and can see myself doing as a career for the rest of my life.…

I always believed that interviews were only connected with the attempt to gain a position. Never have I heard of an interview taking place for any other reason. However, after completing my first informational interview, I learned there is much more to gain: connections, knowledge, and perspective. I was able to conduct my informational interview with Matt Smith, Lead Tax Services Director at Deloitte in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In reference to “Informational Interview” created by Eric Brown, my bridge person, Smith’s daughter, assisted me in making the connection to Smith.…

Prior to the UNI Career Fair, I did some research on the University website to try to figure out which booths I was interested in visiting. The Lutheran Services in Iowa booth wasn’t one that was particularly on my list. This company is a non-profit organization that helps people who are struggling to parent children with behavioral or mental health issues. I wasn’t exactly sure what Lutheran Services In Iowa was all about until I walked past their station, and saw words on a poster saying “help children” and “family focus”.…

I was lured to this company, since I had purchased seed from them, and I knew Pioneer is a well-known seed company in my area. I was interested in being able to interact with farmers as I interviewed them, and to learned more about sales initiatives. As I read more about this position, I did not like how much traveling this internship required to meet with multiple farmers within an area. In my interview, I learned the company focuses on marketing their quality products to their customers. My internship would allow me to have a perspective on what it is like to be a seed dealer by meeting with customers and seeing experienced negotiating skills practiced.…
