1. At Marino Rocks there is a substantially difference between the rock types on the ‘beach’. Some of these are grain size, age, complexion very common rock types that can be found at Marino Rocks include: sandstone and siltstone. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized grains of mineral, hence why its called ‘SAND-stone’. It also contains a cementing material that binds the sand grains together. This is in contrast to siltstone, silt is a size term used for material that's smaller than sand but larger than clay, once again, this is why it’s called ‘SILT-stone’. The siltstone at Marino Rocks is generally mostly pure, containing very little sand or clay. It is evident that the siltstone is far greater in age then most of the …show more content…
There are occurrences of sub-aerial erosion at Marino Rocks. Sub-aerial, like sub-marine simply means below the atmosphere, i.e. any types of erosion occurred in between ocean level and the atmosphere. Therefore sub-aerial erosion is most visible on the top of the yellow sandstone cliffs because the grain size on top of the cliff is larger and therefore more unstable, this is because it is constantly exposed to the weathering and erosion by wind and rain. The general term for most of sub-aerial erosion is Mass movement, massive movement is essentially the movement of weathered material moved by gravity. 1. A breakwater has been constructed at Holdfast Shores because of some inconveniences and also because the area is for recreation. The breakwater was built because the sediment flow in the abrasion zone was being weathered away, it is clear why the breakwater was therefore constructed. If the erosion and weathering of the sediment flows continued the prime real estate and the area would begin to decay. It is a barrier placed offshore to absorb the impact and effects of ocean waves and release calmer waves back out. It can counteract itself as it may adversely affect many silt deposits.
