During my time in the Marine Corps, I have noticed that Marines have lacked in the understanding of close order drill and formations. We conduct these formations by utilizing close order drill to ensure Marines are always ready for any event. Due to Marines continually questioning, why do we have formations for accountability, for promotions, and uniform inspections. Formations have and always will be a part of the Marine Corps traditions. We as small unit leaders utilize the conduct of formations to hold our Marines accountable. If we don’t hold our Marines accountable, how can we expect them to hold those below them accountable. Having accountability of Marines ensures we can give a proper report to our commanding officer, providing …show more content…
Units use formations during uniform inspections to not only have accountability as always, but to allow for proper distance between squads. Marines will conduct “Open Ranks, March” when conducting uniform inspections, what this does is allows the squads to open the formation by 2, 4 and 6 paces allowing the inspector room to inspect. During the inspection, Marines will be reviewed in any uniform that was passed either by section or in a formation on a previous day. The inspection allows the small unit leader to hold the Marine accountable for their uniform, ensuring they are serviceable, form fitting, properly marked and have a clean professional appearance. Once, the inspectors are competed with all squads the Marines will “Close Ranks” by taking 1,3 and 5 paces forward. The Marines will then “Fall Out” and receive final word for the day, whether it be go back to work or for those who had discrepancies to fix their uniforms and continue with plan of the day. The importance of uniform inspections holds Marines accountable not only to be in their appointed place of duty, but to ensure they maintain their uniforms in a clean and professional

The two greatest weaknesses of the book are a lack of emphasis or attention applied to the responsibilities of senior leaders as well as the “real-estate” of the book applied towards Close Quarters Defense (CQD), the Navy’s hand-to-hand combat training. While Couch utilizes his example of CQD as a method the Navy employs to teach discipline and ethics, he devotes 10 out of 113 pages of his book to it. Instead, I believe the book could have been further strengthened by commentary on the failures existent within the mid and upper-tier leadership ranks within the military; specifically, toxic command climates and unethical behavior albeit non-tactical in nature. Nonetheless, Couch’s final chapter provides solutions to improving ethical behavior in a succinct manner. Overall, I enjoyed the book and can cite numerous instances from my own personal career where I would echo Couch’s advice and solutions to ethical dilemmas within our ranks.…

They make certain assumptions about human beings and allow those assumptions to guide their behavior regarding their subordinates (More & Miller, 2015). Sergeant Williams made a mistake in the beginning by not having effective communication with either Officer Roberts or FTO Tibbetts. Sergeant Williams did not take the time to pull either officer to the side, tell them the decision he made about pairing the two and addressed his concerns right there before a final decision was made. He also could have pulled either to the side when he had a feeling that something more than just work related functions were going on between them. There were rumors going on that Officer Roberts and FTO Tibbetts had been kissing where others could see them.…

In his article describing the status of the US Army near the end of the Vietnam War, Robert Heinl highlighted issues concerned with escalating incidents of sedition, the increasingly strained relationship between Soldiers and organizational leaders, and an overall climate that seemed to foster criminal activity. His critique painfully painted a picture of the US Army as it reached a deplorable state of discipline and readiness. The question then begs, what were the proximate causes that enabled this downward spiral? After further analysis, it appears the majority of these problems can be contributed to three proximate causes: the promotion of sedition through external groups and actors, the failure to address internal dissention throughout…

A responsible person can be relied upon by others to get a job done without blaming others for any problems he or she encounters and will therefore be the first choice for a promotion. People who are considered reliable, honest, and responsible will be trusted by the people around them to do what needs to be done. However, such a reputation can easily be sullied, so it is important to remain committed to accountability. Accountable people are also more confident and self-satisfied, so accountability is clearly the right choice.…

Because of that, commander’s have enlisted advisors to give them advice but from only one perspective. Yes, we do have the WO’s at the battalion and company levels to give advice however, commander’s don’t always seek it for one reason or another. I have personally experienced company commanders that thought and treated the COW as a secretary to do all paperwork as well as plan PMTs.
