Growing up as the middle child in a lower income family was, at best, difficult. Abusive parents, rampant drug use, and less than caring family members left me in a precarious position as a child. Was this how every family interacted? Is this what I was to become? Growing up I was always told that I would never amount to anything and given little chance to succeed. My grades in high school showed a lack of desire to surpass those expectations that had been placed upon me. It was not until my junior year in high school that I realized I had the potential to become more than just another victim of circumstances, however it was too late. My grades most certainly assured that I would not receive an academic scholarship and my parents, now divorced, had no intention …show more content…
While some see graduating from Harvard as a very prestigious mile stone in their life, which it is for some, I saw mine as becoming a member of a 241 year old fraternity of great leaders, warriors, and hero’s. I chose to join the United States Marine Corps. I saw no better place to learn true leadership and life skills than the military, specifically the Marine Corps. There are few professions in life where one is forced to make critical decisions under intense, dangerous, and life changing circumstances. This fraternity, as I call it, has produced some of the finest leaders in business and politics. From the late, great, Senator John Glenn to Secretary of Defense Nominee, retired General, James Mattis, these former Marines have brought forth the Corps values in leadership and management and now it is my torch to carry. Through the leadership and management skills I have learned in the Marine Corps, I am now in position to take my next step in this journey and I feel like the skill set I have been equipped with, personally, academically, and professionally will allow me great

I’ve been a Marine Judge Advocate for over 17 years. I say that not to admit guilt but state pride in my duties and profession. Despite the well-worn clichés and easy cynicism about lawyers, I am an unrepentant leader of Marines who questions the Marine Corps approach to character development in our Corps and the oft mere reliance on the “Judge” to teach “ethics” to our Marines. We, as leaders, need to do more to make sure the character that takes command in moments of crucial choices is well-developed in our Marines and beyond reproach. I’ve seen a great deal during my military career, from petty and major criminal conduct to extraordinary demonstrations of integrity and courage, both physical and moral, under fire.…

Prior to high school, my middle school recommended that I attend “Grant High School”, which was looked down upon by my parents due to its reputation. Grant High School only has a 78% graduation rate. My father had been planning on surprising me with an opportunity of a lifetime and began planning since I was in 7th grade. I left my friends and current life behind to move to a place called Oak Park to attend Oak Park High School, which is ranked in the top 100 public schools in the nation and a graduation rate of 99%. I truly believe this is the reason I am here at San Diego State University today, because I was given an opportunity I may not have received by attending Grant High School.…

My leadership crucible did not take place in my military leadership tenure but as senior in college at North Georgia College and State University. The experience of serving as a fraternity president during a time of probation helped shape me into the organizational leader I am today. My fraternity experienced an unfortunate alcohol related event leading it to serve a one-year probation period. At the same time, my peers elected me as President of the fraternity to lead it during this time of adversity and eventually off probation. The presidency presented numerous challenges including morale issues, sharing a common focus, making difficult decisions and working with executives on the school advisory board.…

July 11, 2011. I departed for United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Depot San Diego, California. Mr. Sinek developed a concept called the Golden Circle, which is a concept that epitomizes why the Marine Corps is the most premiere fighting organization in the world. The Marine Corps started out with limited resources, a small amount of manpower, and a concise mission statement. I learned how to be a leader, the ability to have incredible attention to detail, and perseverance in the face of hardships. Leadership came to me early, as I excelled in every duty that was assigned to me. I initially was responsible for the training and conduct of 4 others, and would eventually lead as many as fifteen other Marines. The highlight of my leadership experience is leading a dozen Marines on combat patrols during my time in Iraq. Each time we left the base these men placed full confidence in my ability to keep them out of danger from hidden explosives.…

I have never stopped to think thoroughly about how I was mentally and socially raised, and how I became the person that I am today. I have always faced both explicit and subtle demands in my life, which I was not obligated to satisfy, but felt like I had to, in order to avoid being considered as deviant, because of that I have always tried, and still am trying to satisfy those demands to the best of my abilities. I won’t deny that a huge majority of people are facing the same issue, and I’m not in any way more special than they are, yet I always felt like I am always prioritizing what society asks from me, over what I want to do and be. For the longest time, I was unsure about which category getting a higher education would fit, but I now believe…
