Marina's Poem

Great Essays
The young prince woke to the sound of waves splashing and crashing against the white, sandy shore below him. He had a perfect view of the vast ocean and could see the brightly colored tails of the merpeople flashing in the sun. He had loved the merpeople and the ocean as far back as he could remember. However, he also envied the mystical people who lived among the dolphins and the brightly colored fish. The bright blue water and white sand seemed like a much more preferable place to be than on land to the young prince. It looks so much more beautiful down there. he thought to himself, peering down at the kingdom from the tallest tower. I wish there was some way I could become a merperson.
The prince’s name was Tyde, and he was the youngest

Getting his sister back and becoming a merperson? This would be a dream come true. He went back to the castle, and the next night, Marina told Tyde her plan. Marina would go down and bargain with the Sea Witch, get a potion to switch Tyde and Hali, and then bring Hali up to the beach. Then, Hali would be told the whole story and Tyde would live the rest of his life with Marina and the other merpeople.
The next day, Marina went down to the Sea Witch’s castle. The Sea Witch was a difficult person to bargain with, but in the end, she agreed. Marina, however, would have to give up all her life’s savings. This was fine with Marina- she came from a wealthy family, and she would inherit most of the money they had now. The Sea Witch gave Marina a potion to give to Tyde.
“After you’ve given the potion to the prince, come down to my castle and we’ll change his sister back.” she said.
Tyde came down to the shore that night especially early. He took the potion from Marina, thanking her again and again. Tyde felt his legs come together to form one beautiful, bright green tail. He couldn’t stop smiling all the way down to the Witch’s castle. Marina led him back to the room where Hali and the Witch were. The Sea Witch asked Marina for the money, and she handed it over. After a few minutes of counting and recounting the money, the Sea Witch decided it was

In the poem, “Brenda Stewart” the speaker, Brenda, is dependent on her friend Jill. Their relationship is described as, “If [Brenda is] the high-flying kite,/Jill is [her] string”. This metaphor illustrates how Brenda is a dreamer and that Jill moderates her behaviour. If Jill isn’t there to keep Brenda grounded, Brenda gets carried away without thinking. In addition, after she shoplifted, Brenda “kept thinking [that she] wouldn’t be in this mess/…

When writing a poem a poet can twist a subject into whatever perspective they see fit. While Kilee Greethurst wrote her poems based on her experiences she opened up her thoughts and feelings to give the readers a wall of emotion and imagery. In order to portray these feelings of happiness and romance, she used the concept of bliss as her overall theme. All of Greethurst’s poems revolve around the idea of a blissful state of mind, creating a theme of happiness and love.…

Margaret’s influence on Arthuriana appears in multiple disciplines for the direct similarity between her reign and Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur. Stephen Knight and Merry Wiesner-Hanks’ Arthurian Literature and Society depicts the key similarities. Lancelot and his party represent the Yorkists, Henry VI played Arthur, and Guinevere, locked in a tower, represents Margaret as she defended herself from outside attack and dealt with her actual imprisonment.…

    Sarah Kay's Poem B

This excerpt from the poem “B” by Sarah Kay revolves around the theme “Apologize for the wrong you’ve done, not for who you are”, with 2 examples of imagery, one for sight “Your eyes refuse to stop shining,” and one for sound “But don’t ever stop singing.” The word choice here is very informal, because it is a spoken word, and it is in the context of a mother to her daughter. I chose the artwork above because it represents the 2 examples of imagery: the eye for sight, and the mouth for sound. This is relevant to my life, because it reminds me to keep pursuing what I love, which is to perform, and that I shouldn’t let the opinions of others drag me down or be something that causes me to apologize for who I am. Finally, this can be relatable…

the fish. After a few attempts, he decodes the meaning with a flashback of a memory. Doty says the poem about the mackerel “was written some six months after my partner of a dozen years had died of AIDS, and of course everything I wrote--everything I saw--was informed by that loss, by the overpowering emotional force of it.” The sad memory of his passing partner influenced his poem and that experience he had then became the encounter he displayed in the poem. Berger suggests that the encounter is an experience that the artist and art had.…

“The Little Mermaid” was originally a fairy tale written in 1837 by Hans Christian Andersen that portrayed a young mermaid that faces the tribulations that comes with growing up and showcased her struggle to obtain what she wants most in life. Since then, Andersen’s story has inspired several movie adaptations, once of which being “The Little Mermaid” produced by Disney in 1989. In both the movie and book, similar archetypes between characters can be examined, however the mermaid’s ultimate fate and personality is evidently disparate within the two versions. To begin in Andersen's original story, a mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her widowed father, grandmother, and five older sisters, where she soon learns she must be fifteen to visit the upper world. Soon enough, the mermaid comes of age and saves a handsome prince from a storm, during…

Dilton Marsh – A Thriving Village in the Heart of West Wiltshire You might have heard about this place in the song 'The Dilton Marsh Experience', written by Ben Turner and Richard Chambers, or in the poem 'The Dilton Marsh Halt' written by John Betjemen. Despite being located near the local major towns of Frome, Trowbridge, Warminister, and Westbury, Dilton Marsh has kept its 'villagey' feel. It is home to about 2000 residents and has its own church, pub, fish & chip shop, post office, pre-school and primary school, convenience store, and hairdressers. It is a self-sufficient community that is bustling with activities all throughout the year, not to mention a picturesque countryside and convenient location to see the sights around Wiltshire.…

In the poem,"Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters ,he writes about the sad life of an old crippled lady who was hated. I learned that this person is a writer of poetry and isn 't very pleasant looking from how Masters describes her. The person she speaks about in the poem are "Butch" Weldy and Doctor Meyers, who have different poems of their own as well. " Butch" Weldy is the one that hunts down Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) and Doctor Meyers is the one that attempts to save her. The poet lets us know that small-town America is very judgmental because you can say that those who were wise were the ones being judged("hunts") by their appearance and their beliefs.…
