This chapter starts with Greg Mortenson went back to San Francisco for a holiday, he received a new that Marina is dating another guy and the reason appeared to be Greg who was hard to keep in contact with and eventually Marina fell out of love. Things been worst for Greg when he was fired by UCSF Medical Center for missing two holidays shifts and he is living on the floor near Berkeley’s Lorin Street. He was so poor that when he was robbed by teenagers they pity him; Greg started to change his condition by working two jobs and bus there everyday to make money. Dr. Louis Reichardt, a climber who achieved climbing K2, heard of Greg through Jean so he called to check up on his mission in building the school in Pakistan, when Reichardt heard about Greg’s difficulties he advised Greg to call Jean for helps with paying the bridge cost.
