Question: Think of a character in history or popular culture that does not exist in Inferno (so, you can't use Hector or Paris, for example), and decide where you would place them.

According to the different levels of Hell, Limbo being not as bad and Treachery being the worst I would place the iconic Marilyn Monroe under the second circle of Hell, Lust. Marilyn Monroe is placed under this section because of the actions that occurred between her and the president of the United States at the time, John F. Kennedy. According to the text, the second circle is filled with famous lovers, “After seeing a thousand or more famous lovers- including Semiramis, Dido, Helen, Achilles, and Paris---the Pilgrim asks to speak to two figures he sees together.” (pg.406). During their time period Marilyn Monroe and President JFK’s relationship was considered famous because the president was married and everyone knew about their affair including the first lady, Jackie Kennedy. Because of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with the president of the United States it became very controversial and was brought into the public eye. …show more content…
Achilles and Patroclus were involved with each other sexually and so were Marilyn Monroe and JFK. According to the text Achilles lost his life and so did Marilyn Monroe to love. The text goes onto to say, “See Helen there the root of evil woe lasting long years, and see the great Achilles, who lost his life to love, in final combat.” (pg. 408, lines 64-66). Though Marilyn Monroe did not have a “final combat” with anyone in particular, one could say that her final combat was between her inner self and all the problems she was dealing with at the time. Though Marilyn Monroe was a well-known actress during her time, and adored by many she still lived a sinful life and that’s why she belongs in the second level of
