“I am good, but not an angel. I do sin, but I am not the devil. I am just a small girl in a big world trying to find someone to love” (Brainyquote). By this, Marilyn Monroe was trying to describe the way she felt about herself. She grew up living a tough life, but found a way to get herself out of it. And succede doing so. Even though her life was short lived, she remains a legendary sex symbol today. Born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, Marilyn Monroe was given the name Norma Jeane Mortenson. As a child, she lived a very troubled life (Marilyn Monroe). Norma never knew her father, as his identity was unknown (Biography). The first being Jimmy Dougherty, whom she married at the age of sixteen, and divorced four years later, because of her career (Marilyn Monroe). Her second spouse was the “baseball great”, Joe DiMaggio. Prior to marriage, the two had had a two year romance. The press hailed their relationship as an all-american love affair, but trouble started brewing almost immediately after marriage. DiMaggio found himself uncomfortable with his wife’s sexy public image and wild popularity (history.com). The couple divorced after only nine months of marriage (Marilyn Monroe). But, they remained good friends after the divorce, and DiMaggio famously sent red roses to her grave several times a week for more than three decades after her death (history.com). The final romance of Marilyn Monroe was with playwright Arthur Miller, whom she meant while in the play Bus Stop (Encyclopedia). She actually married him twice; the first time in a civil ceremony, and then in a Jewish (to which she had converted) ceremony two days later (Biography). This marriage, too, only lasted four short years. Just three short months before her death, Marilyn gave her now-famous performance at John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration, singing Happy Birthday Mr. President . This was to be her last famous public performance. On the morning of August 5, 1962, Marilyn was found dead in her Los Angeles home, with an empty bottle of sleeping pills beside her bed (Marilyn Monroe). The coroner said it was ‘probable suicide’ while her physician stated that ‘it was possible that Marilyn Monroe had felt rejected by some of the people she had been close to’ (Biography). Marilyn was then buried in her favorite Emilio Pucci dress, in what was known as a ‘cadillac casket’, the most high end casket (Marilyn Monroe).
