Date of Birth: Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She was the daughter of Gladys Pearl Baker and the identity of her father remains uncertain.
Date of Death: On August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe was found dead at her home in Los Angeles, California. The cause of her death was ruled as a drug overdose as an empty bottle of sleeping pills was located near her bed. She was 36 years old at the time of her death.

Developmental and Family History: Norma Jeane had a difficult childhood. She was born to a mother that was mentally and financially unstable and lacked a father figure, which caused Mortenson to spend much of her childhood in foster care (Biography.com, n.d.). In 1937, Grace McKee, a good friend of Mortenson’s mother, became the child’s guardian. However, a few years later, McKee married Doc Goddard and the newlyweds sent the young child to an orphanage as they were moving and could not afford to bring Norma Jeane with them (McLellan, 2005).
