Marilyn had committed suicide on Saturday, August 4, 1962. She had overdosed on Barbiturates, commonly known as “downers”(hand motions for quotations). These “downers” were prescribed for Monroe’s depression. But it wasn't enough.

She was prescribed sleeping pills (before stated barbiturates) for her war with depression. Barbiturates are drugs that act as central nervous system depressants. Therefore, they can produce a wide spectrum of effects, from mild sedation to total anesthesia. Barbiturate drugs are also effective as hypnotics. To be more specific, Marilyn was prescribed Chloral Hydrate and Nembutal sedatives. Chloral Hydrate is a hypnotic, and a Nembutal Sedative is, as the drug's name implies, just another sedation drug.
