A Review of the Marika-Alderton House Marika-Alderton House (photo 1) which was completed in 1994 was designed for an aboriginal artist, Banduk Marika and her partner. It is located in the Northern Territory, Australia. The house was built with mainly hardwood and plywood with steel frame. The architect, Glenn Murcutt who is a British-born Australian designed this house to show the ideology of environmental and cultural values. He spend three years researching on the aboriginal culture, including sharing life with family, helping him understand indigenous people’s life better. Environmental and cultural values can be observed by its exterior and interior design which are discussed in following paragraphs.

"In Aboriginal Society the family unit is very large and extended, often with ties to the community... Having that family unit broken down has just opened the floodgates for a lot of problems, a lot of emotional problems, mental and physical turmoil.”( Carol Kendal, Indigenous People and the Law,1995). This belief is shown in the program of the house which has a large living room, five bedrooms and two bathroom (figure2). This design of big living room successfully brings the family members together as they cooking, eating, chatting, welcoming friends in this room. As mentioned before, the aboriginal people believe the land owning them therefore they seem themselves as part of environment. The strong relationship with natural environment is shown in term of the simple design of the other seven compartments.
