In the last couple of years many people have been expressing their feeling that marijuana should no longer be illegal in Canada. It has been one of the most highly debated topics in Canada and recently seems like there are more people for legalization than against. Just last year in the Canadian election Justin Trudeau was elected in by the Canadian population. One of Trudeau’s goals was to legalize the use of marijuana once he became Prime Minister of the country. So have majority of Canadians jumped on the mainstream idea and are for legalizing marijuana? Cannabis use further increases the chance for depression, “young women this level of use was associated with over five times the odds of depression and anxiety found in non-users” (Pattron et al., 2002). If it gets legalized for recreational use it will increase the usage across the country. With higher usage more and more people will be effected by this. This poses too much risk as depression isn’t something that can be cured with medicine. Legalization of marijuana would indirectly increase mental illness’s like depression which the people of Canada do not need. Addiction is another issue with marijuana use. The use of marijuana alone increases the likelihood of dependence on it, “It is estimated that 9 percent of people who use marijuana will become dependent on it” (Anthony, Warner, and Kessler, 1994). With more people addicted to it, it will cost the government more to treat these people at rehabilitation services. Also addiction itself ruins the lives of people as it may get in the way of them doing everyday activities and social interactions. One of the worst action a person in this state of mind can pull off is driving while impaired, “Marijuana significantly impairs judgment, motor coordination, and reaction time, and studies have found a direct relationship between blood THC concentration and impaired driving ability” (“Does marijuana use of affect driving?”). Alcohol is legal and many people die because of drunk driving, the legalization of marijuana can follow the same pattern and be another incident that happens more often. Marijuana in general clouds a person judgment could in turn further lead the person to make poor decisions. One of these decisions is trying other further stronger drugs, “it was found that people who had used cannabis more than 50 times a year were 60 times more likely to try other illicit drugs than young people who had never tried cannabis.”().
