Marie Bernarde Soubirous: A Brief Biography

Improved Essays
Marie Bernarde Soubirous was born on January 7, 1844 in Lourdes, France.Even though she was born as Marie Bernarde, everyone called her Bernadette. She was the eldest of six children. Her family was very poor and she suffered from asthma. Everyone thought of her as mentally challenged. This made it hard for her to prove herself to everyone. On February 11, 1858 Bernadette , along with her friends, went to go get firewood. To get firewood she had to cross a small river. Before she was to cross she saw someone. It was a woman. The woman seemed to invite Bernadette to pray so she pulled out her rosary. After praying the rosary with her the woman disappeared. She told her friends what she saw and they told her mother. Bernadette's mother didn’t believe this and banished her from going back to the river. Ignoring her mother’s rules she went back multiple times and even gained an audience. The audience did not believe her. They thought she was completely insane. On February 25 Bernadette saw the Lady again. This time the Lady talked to her. She said, “Go and drink the water in the …show more content…
She joined the Notre-Dame de Nevers. Her health then began to drop. She now had tuberculosis of the bones along with her severe asthma. She died on April 16, 1879 at the age of thirty-five. She was canonized in 1933. Her feast day is the day she died, April 16. She is the patron saint of illness. I chose Bernadette as my saint because I admire the way she continued to listen to and visit the Lady even though everyone thought she was crazy. I also admire how she didn’t let her illness get in the way of living a religious life. I hope I can be like her in the way she never stopped believing in what she wanted to even with others pressuring her to give up. I honor the way she showed the Holy Spirit in her life. Bernadette continuously showed her love for God, Jesus and Mary. When she became a nun she devoted her life to working with the Holy Spirit guiding

In 1412, the future savior of France was born as a peasant girl during what is now known as the Hundred Years War. When Joan was thirteen, she began to hear voices from whom she quickly identified as three Christian Saints: St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret (“Joan of Arc martyred”). Three years later, these voices presented her with a divine mission: to help France remove England from their territory and to help the disinherited Dauphin Charles VII take the French throne (Bellitto).…

Joan’s process of death started with the English. The English captured Joan and made her sign a contract to worship saints and live in a cell the rest of her life(Hillian 14). Joan didn’t initially want to sign this contract. Joan wasn’t given another option of signing a contract or being killed, she begged but they gave no mercy. Joan’s life ended in a slow and painful process. The way the English killed Joan was that they burnt her at the stake(Bower 131). Joan stood at the stake proud and holding her rosary beads not letting the English know they got to her. She out up a fight and resisted her death, but knew she would rather die than spend the rest of her life in prison. Finally, Joan was rewarded for her faithful life towards the saints by becoming one. For a while, Joan was forgotten, but ninteentwenty Joan fit all the criteria and was rewarded with the title of becoming a saint(Macdonald 42). All of Joan’s fighting and faith were reasons why she was considered for a saint. Joan contributated to four mircales and showed proof of heroic virtue. The last contributing factor in Joan’s special life was her death and becoming a saint.…

It figures that any story like her’s could only be a fairytale, but Saint Marie? She means so much more to us. She is the personification of all my goals. The pinnacle of success in my eyes. She lived out her days as a false saint, worshiped by the women sent to beat her down, all because one of them couldn't hide their true nature for long. Talk about reparations. They say the devil in her radiated, that these false seraphim burned around her and turned to dust for their sins. They’ll say what she had was a devil, but I know better. Saint Catherine was born in Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347 during the outbreak of the plague. She was the twenty-fifth child born to her mother, although almost half of her brothers and sisters died during their childhood. Bonaventura, Catherine’s sister, died at the age of sixteen, leaving her husband as a widower. Her parents thought that this would be a great opportunity for Catherine to marry, so they suggested that he marry her as a replacement. Catherine was appalled by this idea and ended up fasting and cut her hair short to mar her appearance. Her extreme devotion to family made Catherine’s parents allow her to live as she pleased. Catherine treated her family with great respect, as Mary and Joseph would represent her parents, and her siblings as the apostles.…

Saint Julia (Julie) Billiart was born in 1751 in Cuvilly France. After she sadly died in 1816 at the age of 64 she was made the patron saint against poverty, bodily ills, and disease. In her childhood, she was very religious, at age seven, she already knew the catechism by heart, and used to gather up her peers and tell it to them. Julie’s progress in spiritual things was so rapid that the parish priest, Father Dangicourt, allowed her to both make her first communion and her confirmation at age nine. Five years later she took a vow of chastity, which is a promise to never have sex.…
