Maricel A Narrative Fiction

Maricela hesitated at the door of the overcrowded office, taking in the teetering stacks of paper and books littering almost every surface. Every surface, that is, except the small round table in the back. Seated at the table was her professor, squinting at a laptop screen, reading glasses perched ineffectively. After a brief moment, the professor looked up, saw Mari, and removed her glasses.
She smiled expectantly.
"Hello, I'm here for my conference," Mari quietly squeaked out.
"Come in, have a seat."
Mari made a show of taking the empty seat across the table and pulling out her writer's notebook, trying to prolong the process to delay the inevitable—the professor was going to read her writing, and there was nothing Mari could do to stop

Through time, femininity has been viewed as a weakness, but through the symbolism and characterizations of the Mirabal girls, Alvarez displays how femininity can function as a hidden strength. The Mirabal girls face challenges that any revolutionary might expect, with the added attacks on their abilities because of their femininity. Instead of being discouraged and abandoning their womanhood to adopt a masculine, heroic-archetype demeanor, the girls use their supposed “weakness” to their strengths. Since the beginning, Minerva had fought out against the gender roles pushed on her by going to school and speaking out, yet never fully abandons her female nature.…

The Narrative of Cabeza de Vaca is an autobiographical account of the eponymous Spanish explorer’s eight year journey of survival in a strange land which provides a detailed description of the vast terrain, multifarious wildlife, and the diverse cultures of the early Americas. The importance of this unique piece lies within the writing’s function as a gateway providing a glimpse into the cultures of the indigenous people of the Americas as the first recorded confrontation and intermingling between the Europeans and the Native Americans. Cabeza de Vaca was one of the first few Europeans to live among the Native Americans and actually adapt to the cultures of the Native Americans. However, the Spaniards’ steps towards this partial cultural assimilation were driven by the unconscious, evolutionary incentive of survival. This driving force taints and complicates these survivors’ attitude transformations and cause Cabeza de Vaca’s opinions to fluctuate throughout the narrative.…

It seemed like a decent amount of research was needed, so I opened a new tab to see my best friend, Google. I scrolled through each unappealing page, and it felt like I was staring into the sun. I could not stand to look at this paper for another minute, but I still had a long way to go.…

I arrived in the Academic Plaza before four in the afternoon and noticed two people lying in their hammocks, which were on opposite ends of the plaza. The sun radiated through the leaves and a light breeze kept the plaza cool and balmy. One of the hammocks was a bright turquoise color and it quickly caught my eye. I decided to approach this person versus the other because she was closer in proximity to me and exuded a friendly aura. Haley’s hammock dangled in one of the larger trees in the area from a notably large branch, which was near enough to the ground for her to reach.…
