It is such amazing phenomena that siblings can come from the same parents and household, yet they can be so different. Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are no exception. Elinor is the definition of the perfect big sister and Marianne plays the role of the typical little sister. Even though they are so different, they help to guide one another through life’s trials and tribulations. In the end, Elinor has helped shaped Marianne into a responsible and logical young woman.

When Jane Austen was ten years old she attended Abbey School in Reading (“Jane Austen”). During school she was taught etiquette and was trained in practical arts considered important for women during time (“Jane”). She had to leave school in 1786 because her father couldn’t pay the school’s tuition (“Jane Austen”). Her father died early while destroyed the family both emotionally and financially (“Jane Austen”). Jane Austen’s mother and daughters were dependent on her sons for assistance (“Jane Austen”). Three women in her life influenced Austen. Her aunt, Mrs. Jane Leign Perot, left a big impression on her because of her haughty, out-spoken, and self-righteous behavior (“Jane Austen”). Marianne meets John Willoughby when she hurts herself while running down a muddy hill. Marianne and Willoughby are madly in love with each other. She has eyes for no one else. Elinor and Edward’s relationship is very quiet and put on hold. Willoughby is forced to leave on urgent business one day and Marianne is devastated. She is hysterical the whole day.
