Mariam ends the life of Rasheed to free herself from his constant abuse. She also frees Laila from his control and allows her children to be free. This causes a sudden shift in power, similar to that of the change in control in Titanic when the Titanic collided with the iceberg. The constant struggle for survival is parallel throughout the novel as well as in Titanic. Mariam and Laila constantly endure the abuses of Rasheed and fail to gain control over their lives until the very end, this is similar to the struggle of the passengers on the Titanic as the ship plummets into the vast depths of the…

When compared to Laila, Rasheed is basically a perfect fit for a stereotypical male role. Like most stereotypical men, they all want sons. The reasons could be for financial or family name reasons, but one of Rasheed’s reasons is because his own son died. Once Laila bares him a son (which is actually Tariq’s son), he treats little Zalmai with compassion, patience, and so much love. The moment Laila had a daughter, Aziza, Rasheed was in disgust with her.…

Throughout the novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, written by Khaled Hosseini, I was able to find many symbols that reappeared as I read this text. However, I believe the two important symbols that I came across that are potent to the development of the main theme, the dominance\ of men and the life of women, is when Mariam signs a contract for her marriage and execution. Another symbol that emphasizes the theme of this novel is Mariam’s and Laila’s burqa. To begin, I believe the burqa Mariam and Laila receive when they marry Rasheed establishes the theme about relationship expectations. For example, Rasheed tells Mariam that “a woman’s face is her husband’s business only” (Hosseini 79).…

“There was a moment of hesitation, and then his hand was on her neck, his thick fingers slowly pressing the knobs in the back of it. His thumb slid down, and now it was stroking the hollow above her collarbone, then the flesh beneath it. Mariam began shivering. His hand crept lower still, lower, his fingernails catching in the cotton of her blouse (Hosseini 44).” This interaction between Mariam and Rasheed shows a small weakness that Rasheed may have for Mariam.…
