Mariachi Research Paper

The origins of Mariachi music dates back hundreds of years, but in the form modern society knows it the Mariachi began in the nineteenth century in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The culture of Mexico is identified by their food, language, traditions, and most importantly music. Music is a huge part of the Mexican culture, today mariachi music and bands are associated with Mexico by default. The first existing roots of Mariachis are uncertain, but Mexico takes great pride in its enchanting rhythms and differentiation of music. The music identifies the Mexican culture with its instruments, clothes, and influences. When Mexico was invaded by the Spanish, the foreigners imported instruments, such as the violin, the harp and the guitar. Mariachi, thus, derives from the Spanish theatrical orchestra. Eventually, these instruments were fused with the sounds of the natives and Africans; the sound of the Mariachi is a blend of all three cultures. By the end of the 19th century Mariachi had evolved with the vihuela, a pair of violins and the guitarron and became common instruments of the Mariachi music. Since in the early years, Mexico did not approve of female musicians, a mariachi’s outfit, known as a charro, is very masculine. Their gear consists of ankle boots, a big sombrero, a large bow tie, a short jacket, and a pair of pants with shinny buttons.
