Maria Jolly Sailor Bold Quotes

Decent Essays
These lyrics describe a story of a Siren named Maria. Maria's jolly sailor bold is a man who lives in England. I have inferred this by the lines "His hair it does in ringlets", as many men in England during this time wore wigs with ringlets and the line "My father is a merchant — the truth I now will tell, And in great London City". Maria falls in love with the sailor; The sailor becomes her jolly sailor bold. This song is sung by Sirens to lure sailors to them. This song, when sung by sailors, represents the sailors hope to become a jolly sailor bold. When this song is sung by sirens, it represents a warning that Sirens are dangerous creatures.

“But Pearl, who was a dauntless child… screamed and shouted, too, with a terrific volume of sound… caused the hearts of the fugitives to quake within them.” In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the story of a married woman who had a child out of wheelock is told. Throughout this novel Pearl, Hester’s child out of wedlock, is viewed as a character who represents sin, hope, and love, because she is a character that represents a different person than what a puritan is suppose to be, the way that Pearl stands out and does not fit into the puritan colony is shown throughout the story. Since the day Pearl was born she was a representation of sin and of a “Demon offspring”(Hawthorne 232). Pearl was a child out of…

From Pride Stems Life and Death The inner emotions and traits of humans are unpredictable, because each person’s thoughts and opinions are specialized for themselves. In James Hurst's short story, The “Scarlet Ibis”, Brother states that, "...pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death" (347). This means that everyone has a choice to make, either good or bad. Choosing one or the other, can greatly affect each life.…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Ring Around the Rosie and The Black Plague In the 14th century, a terrible plague also known as the Bubonic plague struck Europe in 1347, killing over a million people. There is a strange conspiracy theory about the relations between the nursery rhyme “Ring Around the Rosie” and the Black Death. These theories have been reported related to each other because of the lyrics of the song, and the symptoms in the disease. With that being said, I believe that the nursery rhyme has very little to do with the Black Death.…

Author used words such as “on and on”(line 11) to demonstrate the deepness and the intensiveness of the young man’s desire toward the woman. An image of the young man alone in the bed, “tossed from one side to another”(line 2) showed how much he suffered from loving the woman he was unable to get. This stanza conveyed sorrows and pains the man went through when the maiden he thought of day and night rejected him, and this created in a sad tone in contrast to the happy and exciting tone before. Nonetheless, starting from the fourth stanza, the tone seemed to move back toward the happy side of the scale. In line 16, “With harps we bring her company”, the young man shortened the distance between him and the maiden through playing harps.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…
