My speech is about Maria Gomez and what she did to change the standards of living in el Salvador and the injustice of her death – does her death illustrate the futility of trying to stand up to corruption or has she become martyr to the cause of justice because in death she is more powerful than when she was alive?
Born on 5 May 1942 Maria Cristina Gomez was a primary school teacher and community leader in El Salvador
A member of Emmanuel Baptist church in El Salvador, Gómez was a national leader both of Baptist women and in the teachers union

Maria had been taken from an area that was close to the Salvadoran Air Force base.
General Bustillo a known mass murderer who is wanted in other parts of the world such as France for unspeakable things and the then head of the Salvadoran Air Force, was possibly involved in Maria’s murder.
Former colleagues of Maria stated that the General had publicly threatened her before and had ordered the killing.
At a march staged in protest the new nationwide wave of repression the protesters ended their march at a vigil that was held in memory of Maria
In defense, the Salvadoran government denied any involvement, stating instead that the purpose behind her abduction and murder was to discredit the Air Force, which is in charge of the area in which the murder occurred.
The Government also said that Gómez had never been officially arrested by any government agency, and that the authorities had never even questioned her
