When dealing with change and progress in the early portion of the twentieth century in America, one organization and one event come to mind. In 1911, the Triangle Waist Company building caught fire and several of workers in the building didn’t make it out alive. The majority of the workers were young females who worked long hours for little pay and ruthless conditions. Those who had the ability to fight for the women and victims did, pursuing ideas such as unions, for workers’ rights. The owners of the company would be pardoned eventually but their reputation tarnished by the public opinion of them.…

Fall River, Massachusetts is not nearly the poorest urban neighborhood of the United States. Its people have not endured any fraction of the strife, poverty, violence, or tumult that residents of the South Bronx have. Its schools are functional, its neighborhoods are diverse, its hospital systems – though similarly understaffed and sometimes unhelpful – operate smoothly. In 2012, Fall River was ranked among the top “100 Best Communities for Young People” in America (“2012 Competition Winners”). It lends itself the nickname of “The Scholarship City” and its motto maintains a universally optimistic and perseverant attitude in reaffirming that “We’ll try”.…

In the novel Geographies of Home, written by Loida Maritza Pérez, there are copious references to New York City and its importance to the plot of the story. Published in 1999, the novel follows a Dominican family in its migration to NYC and the challenges they face. As readers, we see problems involving Lliana, Marina, Rebecca, Papito, and Aurelia. Between rape, violence, and abuse, Pèrez does a great job incorporating Brooklyn into the plot of the story. A lot of the wild stories written about in the novel are more believable considering the reputation Brooklyn had in the 1900’s.…

With a title like So Far From God, I held high expectations that this book would send me on a roller coaster of emotions ranging from sorrow for the tragedies of the characters to inspiration strengthening my own religion while whetting my appetite for the Spanish culture. During the first hundred pages of this book, though, I grew disappointed that my high expectations hadn’t been met. I finally came across a revelation when I stopped blaming my lack of engagement on the author’s writing style. When I took a step back to look at the novel from a perspective outside of my own culture, I can see how other cultures would embrace this mystical Hispanic folklore. So Far From God speaks to the state of humanity by giving a Hispanic twist to the…

Machismo is strong or aggressive masculine pride. It is used throughout Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The theme of machismo is shown as a moral compass for the society in the novel by replacing faith and creating expectations to the characters to prove their masculinity. An example of this is when the Vicario brothers go and kill Santiago to gain their family reputation back. The men were more superior than the women and had more control over the households, while the women were just allowed to cleaned and cooked.…

The Love of God God is the creator of all life and he is the highest of all powers, he embodies all ‘persons’ (The Father, The Son, and The Spirit). Although we cannot be as him, we should try to follow his guidance. In this world, it is easy to get wrapped in earthly things. We are humans, and many of times we fail by trying to hold a certain status, gain certain materialistic possessions, and cause great emotional/physical harm to one another. In my beliefs, that is not the way one should live.…
