Maria Anna Mozart was her family’s first prodigy and at one point was considered the finest pianist in Europe, until her younger brother, Wolfgang Mozart, came along. Maria’s father boasted about how well she played the piano, but that it would not be long until she would be overshadowed by her brother (Smithsonian). Maria Anna Mozart, also known as Marianne and nicknamed Nannerl, was born on July 30th, 1751 in Salzburg, Austria. Maria was the oldest of 7 children, but only she and her brother Wolfgang survived infancy and lived until adulthood. Her parents were named Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart. Leopold Mozart was a court musician and began teaching Maria how to play the harpsichord when she was 8 years old. At the age of 10, her 3-year-old brother Wolfgang started playing alongside her, and would try to play pieces from Maria’s song book (Smithsonian). It is said that Maria was Wolfgang Mozart’s earliest musical role model and history owes her a great measure of credit for his genius. Leopold took Maria and Wolfgang on tour in many cities to show off their musical talents (The Guardian). For instance, they went to Vienna, which was the musical center of Europe during the Classical Period. However, because of the social views of the time, it was impossible for her to continue her musical career as she was reaching marriage age; in the 18th century women did not become composers.
