In the novel Margie Summerfield gave up her family time to go work a second job for more money. She ended up working three jobs; a nurse at the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital, laundry, and sewing. Her husband went off to war so she needed more money to pay the rent. She would even sometimes go out of her way to get Alfie special treats.
She did this all for her family. In the book “Stay Where you are and then Leave” it says “I’m on a night shift again I’m afraid, so you’ll have to look after yourself this evening”(38-39). This shows that at 9 years old he still has to look after himself. He gave up school to work a shoe shine stand at Kings Cross. He still didn’t give up all of school though. He still went to school on Mondays and Thursdays. The nice thing is that his mom doesn’t now he stopped going to school and works at Kings Cross.

Usually Monday and Thursday...Today, however, wasn’t a Monday and it wasn’t a Thursday… It was a Tuesday, and so when Alfie was fully dressed, he reached into the back of his wardrobe and pulled out the wooden shoeshine box...Alfie Summerfield was the man of the house now, after all. And he had a living to earn”(50,52,53). It also says “Alfie stole Mr. Janáček’s shoeshine box for one reason only: so that he could go out to work like Leonard Hopkins had and help his mother out...Damley Road was only a short walk from King’s Cross, and Alfie made his way along the familiar streets”(63).
Margie and Alfie are not the only people who change part of their lives and give up something for another thing. For instance when Georgie (Alfie’s dad) went off to the war to help out his country.
