Margaret Spellings Summary

Decent Essays
In reference to the article published March 1st on the protests about Margaret Spellings by Sierra Dunne, there are few clarifying points I would like to make in order to get both sides of the story. This article pointed out why the protests occurred, what she has done and said. It also includes images of the protest and what all happened. Yes, what she is doing is wrong, it is not what the UNC school system needs, we do not want a customer relationship with our professors. However, if we strongly do not want that relationship we must stop asking for customer service from the school. We want the University to do things for us, to give us resources and to tend to our needs. If we do, collectively, come together as one unit, with the same attitude

In chapter one, the author Martha Menchaca discusses the racial foundations and history of Mexican-American Indians, Whites, and Blacks. Menchaca begins her chapter discussing how archeologists and anthropologists in the past before the 1960s had little interest in recovering Mexican-American prehistory. It was not until the 1970s Mexican-American anthropologists began to recover their culture’s prehistory. Menchaca also shares that Mexican-American indigenous past is both in Mexico and the Southwest and have roots tracing back to Aztlán. She argues that Aztlán may not have been the true site of the origins of many Indians.…

The first organization that stood out the most to was the UT Cross and Track Club. This organization gives the students , and also faculty members a chance to compete in races , and bring the entire UT community together. My second choice was Alpha Kappa Alpha Soriety (AKA) which encourages scholastic and ethical standards , encourages equality and friendship among college women which brings me to my third selection which is the Black Student Union . Throughout Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, she consistently uses certain literary devices to encapsulate the struggles of slaves in order to create a strong anti-slavery argument. Harriet Jacobs takes on the voice of Linda, a slave girl who was exposed to the viciousness of man’s nature, and describes her own experiences as Linda’s. In this passage, Linda had just given birth to her first child -- a son she would later call Benjamin. She had gotten pregnant by her white friend Mr. Sands so that she could fend off her master’s advances. This passage occurs near the end of the sixth chapter, called “The New Tie to Life”.…

The article Ian Tuttle wrote “Go Back To Class”, is a plea to Jefferson County students to educate themselves on the protest before taking action towards protesting the cause. In Tuttle’s three page article, he loses himself in his opinion based assumptions, and puts down students and teachers for managing to shut down schools in the Jefferson County area due to protesting against the new reform censorship in regards history curriculum. Ian feels strongly about his beliefs on why many students chose to walk out that day, these beliefs had the ability to shed a negative light on only the protesting students of Jefferson County. Minerva Jones Summary

What I learned about "Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters, is that in the epitaph is that she wrote poems in her village and she had a "heavy body, cock-eye, and rolling walk." The people Jones speaks about are the people in her village and the relationships and interactions that are evident are very horrible as Jones explains how a man named "Butch" Weldy and Doctor Meyers were responsible of her death. Some of the things this lets us know about the poet's view of small-town American culture is that people were willing to make fun of and/or kill someone because of the way they looked and/or walked. What I learned about "Butch"Weldy" by Edgar Lee Masters, is that after he became religious, he got "a job in the canning works."…

The idea of witchcraft increased when friends of Betty Parris, which included eleven year-old Ann Putnam, seventeen year-old Mercy Lewis, and seventeen year-old Mary Walcott began to show similar illness and behavior as Betty. The previously held belief that witchcraft targeted children made the doctor’s diagnoses seem incredibly accurate. Tituba suggested a form of counter magic to heal the girls. She needed to bake a rye cake with the urine of the infected victim and feed the cake to a dog. (Dogs were believed to be used by witches to carry out acts of pure evil and witchery.)…

This discussion was looking at disagreement in a positive light. Many people nowadays hate to disagree with other people but according to Frank Bruni and Margaret Spellings we should not feel this way. They also believe that since people do not like to disagree with one another that they opt out on something that should be done. According to Margaret Spellings we are having “fewer opportunities to get to know one another because of the technological advances of todays time.…

Moderate Antiwar Activist I am writing this letter to throw my weight behind the antiwar activism going on at the university and around the country. It is entrenched in our constitution that it is our basic right to protest and there could be no better time to exercise that right than in the current situation considering the irresponsible move by our government to send troops to Vietnam. Imagine what the world would be like if we all remained silent about these issues of national interest. Ours would be a sad story because there is enough evidence from the past on what happened to our country when the crowds chose to remain silent.…

As author George Saunders said in “Thank You, Esther Forbes” on page 62, “By honing the sentences you used to describe the world, you changed the inflection of your mind, which changed your perceptions.” In this simple, yet elegant sentence I would elaborate its meaning as, The more vocabulary you have at your disposal the more vividly you can describe the world around you. Let me give you an example; If you and a 5th grader see an apple on a chair, the one with the more broad vocabulary would be able to describe said apple better, but the argument author Saunders makes is should you? Should you describe the apple sitting in the chair with crippling detail or should you just say simply, yet elegantly “The red apple sat upon the birch wood chair.”…
