Margaret Lazarus The Lion King Summary

This article, written by Margaret Lazarus basically discusses her views on a popular movie at this time, The Lion King. She begins by talking about how excited she and her sons are to see the newly released box-office record breaking Walt Disney movie. Shortly after, she jumps right into discussing how stereotypical and prejudiced the movie is. She claims that it is stereotypical and prejudiced against African Americans, gays, and even the ghettos of current society. She points out that the golden-maned “good” lion presents his first born male child to the others of the ecosystem or animal kingdom, and they all pay tribute to this lion cub, who will one day be their king. If I had just read to this point I would not yet think she is as critical as she actually turns out to be but I just find it suspicious that she is knocking these classic, very popular tales that Disney makes. The second thing that really jumps out at me is that one paragraph after she bashes the beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid is when she finally gets to her trip to the movies and she states that “even before the title sequence, however, I started to shudder.” At this point, I am just confused. This lady hasn’t even got to the movie and she already has her mind made up that it is stereotypical and prejudiced. I’m not sure why, but I think it is obvious that she is either extremely biased towards something or she just hates
