All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early spring. Urban cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted parades, celebrity kings and queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities. Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many of these parades in the Big Easy. My grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Gras and the Cajun culture. After hearing their stories, I decided to attend the Courir de Mardi Gras. The Courir de Mardi Gras is a traditional Mardi Gras event held the Tuesday before the Catholic lent season in small rural towns across southwest Louisiana. This is known as Fat Tuesday run.
We arrived early on a chilly spring morning in the small farm town known as Mamou, Louisiana.

The riders wore costumes of bright colored cloth. Similar to the scarecrow in the wizard of oz, the outfits consisted of pieces of cloth sewn into burlap sacks or old shirts and pants. The hats were tall and pointy. They looked like the dunce caps used in school in the past. Most of the riders wore masks. The masks rivaled Halloween masks with skeletons, clowns, and other scary figures. A few riders wore beastly costumes. These beastly costumes were a representation of the Rougaroo. The rougaroo is Louisiana folklore about a beast that was half man and half wolf. The folklore is similar to the werewolf stories. Each costume worn was as unique as the individual wearing …show more content…
All along the route, townspeople waved and cheered as the riders passed. Once the procession arrived back at the American Legion Hall, the ingredients were given to the cooks. The aromatic smells drifted in the air. The holy trinity, as we call it, which consists of onions, bell peppers, and celery, were sautéed down in a gigantic iron pot. The collection of chicken, sausage and other ingredients from the ride was added to the pot. The crowd danced and drank for several hours as they waited for the gumbo to be cooked. Once the gumbo finished cooking, all of the riders and their families lined up to eat. This communal meal reminded me of all of my big family reunions. The food was amazing, as well as the company that shared in partaking this

When one thinks of Detroit or Michigan in general, they automatically think of the musicians and sports teams that came from there; Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, The Tigers, The Lions, and The Red Wings. One assumes when someone talks about Detroit that they live there and give the person the utmost respect despite only visiting or living outside of the city. What caused Detroit's descent from a wealthy, vital city into one where "ruins" are common and the city is bankrupt? The lack of care and concern from the people who are in the charge of the city and its people. Despite all of these attractions, the city is still in ruins and is still in major debt.…

It’s not typical for a teenager like myself to be caught watching a symphony. Due to this well-known stereotype, I was skeptical when I attended the Symphony of the Americas concert in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. However, much to my surprise I was entranced by the alluring symphony and atmosphere. The performance, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, paid tribute to both Italian and Hispanic composers by featuring music by Gioachino Rossini, Arturo Marquez, Gaetano Donizetti, and the legendary Ernesto Lecuona.…

Gumbo, a light brown soup, but served over steamed rice is what we eat during the cooler months of Louisiana. Gumbo is way more than just some brown soup it's andouille, cayenne pepper, roux, chicken, bell peppers, and garlic. My grandmother, Maman (which is mom in French), had a way of making gumbo do the zydeco in your mouth. Growing up, Gumbo was a reason to get everyone together and spend time with each other; just like all the gumbo ingredients spending time together in that tall silver Magnalite pot that Maman kept on her stove waiting for the family to devour it. Our family bonded over Gumbo by discussing why we felt that George Bush should be doing more for the Katrina victims, or why gas prices were almost three dollars, but most of…

Churches are let out early, schools close, businesses shut their doors, People have parties near parade roots, and people on floats start celebrating. Everything going on around new tourist would be something completely new and surprising. The reason they would be surprised is because Mardi Gras happens almost exclusively in New Orleans, and although it may not seem like it in any way shape or form, has religious influences. The first day of Mardi Gras is January sixth, but that date is also the Twelfth Night, a Christian holiday that comes twelve days after Christmas. The twelve days are a time for people to celebrate and feast, and the Twelfth Night is usually the climax of that tomfoolery.…
